arunas [POST 385] (1) from Lithuanian, short form arius, arys; stems from the drama "arnūas" written by V Kreves and is the hero in the drama and which is found in Merkines region songs; suffix -ūnas - derived from olden time first names *aras, *arys (similar surnames aras, arelis, aronis): Lithuanian word arus "greitas" means fast, ar-uoti "skubiai eiti" / walk in a hurry, "daug dirbti" / do much, ar-ioti "lakstyti" / to run about. It spread in Lithuania due to the song's various versions with the use of the character's name Saronas (possible derivation with the suffix -onas from the Lithuanian words sar-ioti " siaubti" ravage, "niokoti" lay waste, plėti" to rob, "bastytis" to wander. Comparable to the Prussian first names Sary-bod, Sar-otte), but which is held primary, but in Merkines area arunas is the local equivalent. The hill's name aruno kalnas / kapas (Merkines area village of Masalikių), the name arunai (agare), for example arunas (Jonikelis, Druskikinkai) is new, influenced from the drama's hero's name.
